Installing cURL & Git on Mint / Ubuntu Linux

I started working on Windows for my Ruby on Rails (RoR) environment. It worked fine for couple of days but now I started getting different types of error and trying to troubleshoot those for last two days and am not able to resolve it.

In my research during troubleshooting, I came to conclusion that Windows is not the best environment for developing on Ruby on Rails. Hence, I selected to go with Linux. So I decided to install Mint (Flavor of and extension to Ubuntu) Linux on a VirtualBox. I have worked with Linux few times so I am kind of familiar but not an expert in any way. I started creating my environment for RoR. I was on good start and I realized that I made some errors (more detail I will explain in my upcoming post) and wasted so much of time. So I created new VM and have started step by step process. I didn’t have cURL installed on my machine so I installed that first. You can download the cURL from this site. I tried with downloading latest tarball and untar it, followed by running make command but for some reason it didn’t work. So after few minutes, I decided to go with apt-get command.

$ sudo apt-get install curl

After 2 minutes wallah!! I was able to see the version of curl. To check that you can write

$ curl —version

Current version for cURL is 7.24 and I have 7.21.6 installed. The issue with apt-get install command is, you always get older version, but at the same time it is the easiest and fastest way to install. I am hoping that this would not affect anything else. However, I will be updating to current version (as soon as I figure out how to do it on command line).

Now I was off to installing Git. I downloaded latest version from git site for Linux. I’ve untar the tarball and when I tried to run make command I got following error:

/bin/sh: curl-config: not found
    CC daemon.o
In file included from cache.h:4:0,
from daemon.c:1: git-compat-util.h:168:25: fatal error: openssl/ssl.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. make: *** [daemon.o] Error 1

I looked at many sites but didn’t find any positive or useful information that allows me to install the Git properly. I kept on searching and came across a blog post by Evgeny Goldin - 3 ways to install Git on Linux (Ubuntu). This was a life saver for me. The git version I downloaded from site is 1.7.9.3. I started following his advise and I was able to install it. This is what I did:

$ cd git-1.7.9.3

$ sudo apt-get install libcurl4-gnutls-dev libexpat1-dev gettext libz-dev libssl-dev

$ make prefix=/usr/local all

$ sudo make prefix=/usr/local install

$ which git
/usr/local/bin/git (note: you will see this line when you do which git)

$ git —version
git version 1.7.9.3

Now I am off to installing Ruby and then Rails on my Linux box. I will update more as soon as I complete the installation and have working solution.

I have just started exploring Ruby on Rails. I took introduction to C, VB and couple of other languages during my college but never got a chance to implement any of the programming after I passed those classes. I wanted to start programming, and one of my main reasons was to develop thinking process. To challenge my brain to think differently and improve logic, which I thought would be great to do with programming. Ruby on Rails is a new generation language and lots of materials and support groups are available for it so I decided to start with that. I started reviewing Michael Hartl’s Rails Tutorial (excellent & free). I also started reviewing Apress’ Beginning Ruby - From Novice to Professional by Peter Cooper. This book also looks very good so far. I was talking to Divya Mistry last night about programming and what I am doing and my road-map. This morning he forwarded me a link to a great article by Jimmy Li - Learning to Code: The Roadmap I Wish I Had Been Given. Excellent article and shows a novice programmer, like me, how one should start to become a web developer. It covers great material for you to get started, update skills for few months, and till you get comfortable with coding and can start learning from your own programs. I think now I have good starting point and cannot wait for some programming fun to begin!

This is crazy! It feels like Deja vu running all over me again. Last year, I was thinking it would be great if we can have sign language and speech recognition built in our everyday life. It would be interesting to see how it will change our work style and I think it will give a great energy to our boring office routine. And here we have Google Motion almost after year. I love Google for this reason. They help realize someone’s dream / imagination. Dreams put into action. Can’t wait to play around with this.

Based on my brother’s request another song from movie Dabangg. Song’s name is Hud Hud Dabangg (aka udd udd dabangg). The step is during the lyrics “hud hud dabangg dabangg” is a signature step of the song. Pretty funny but not easy to mimic the attitude. Nice song as well. Dabangg means Fearless. I made the Vietnamese very well known dish called Pho, which is a sort of noodle soup, and it turned out pretty nice. Better than I thought. BTW this post might be repetitive for many following me on Facebook [FB] as I have uploaded the pictures there but wanted to give out my recipe to you so you can make it at home as well and enjoy different cuisine.

So it was a long weekend and at my place I try to show off my culinary skills during holidays. Also, I try my best to cook every Sunday morning but for the reason or the other it doesn’t happen… Anyways, coming back to the point, it is President’s Day long weekend. I decided to make Spaghetti on Saturday, February 13, 2010 and it turned out awesome. First time in my cooking I have used red wine and I was excited. I was not planning to use it but then I thought, what the heck, so I did use it and was happy that I made the right decision. Everyone liked it at home and that was the beginning of my inner evil cook to invite me to prepare something new. I was craving Pho for couple of days and tried to see if I can get any Vegetarian Pho, but that was not possible because all the restaurants I knew, were, using chicken broth and not the vegetable broth. So I decided to create my own version of Vegetarian Pho (Noodle Soup).

There are many variations available but I followed the following and I guess it was the closest match I could have got in first shot. It was almost 80% plus match with the originals I have had before. It is very simple and fast to cook. It took me hour and half to shop for groceries and less than hour to cook (the way I wanted to test).

Recipe:
Vegetarian Pho, thanks to Vegetarian Times. I followed the basics from Vegetarian Times but added some of my own variations to it while preparing it.

According to Vegetarian Times recipe, Nutritional Information, for Pho is as follows:

Sodium            578mg
Fiber                    3g
Sugar        5g

Pretty healthy stuff (I am not a nutritionist but I am sure many things are low enough to eat it every other week) and last but not the least, some photos of my culinary creation! ;-)

Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and I noticed a distinct slowdown in the overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as
Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NEWS 5.0, MONEY 3.0 and CRICKET 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.

Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.
What can I do?

DEAR Madam,

First, keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.
If that application works as designed, Husband1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewellery 2.0 and Flowers 3.5..

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5 or Beer 6.1.
Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-In-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In addition, please do not attempt to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and will crash Husband 1.0.

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.
You might consider buying additional software to improve memory and performance.
